Back Pain Exercises – Do You Really Need Them

Everyone Can Exercise His Or Her Back. . . Even Without Doing Back Pain Exercises

An insurance executive summed up the thinking of 22 of 65 ruptured disc patients in a recent US survey of back pain sufferers: ‘I feel that walking and swimming are more constructive than regular back pain exercises. They are more relaxing and they keep me in top shape.’

Many of the survey participants who do back pain exercises regularly concur. Said a chemist, ‘Back exercises help, but walking and swimming are even more essential to maintaining my mobility.’

And survey participants who were in too much pain to do back exercises felt the same way. One retiree said. The only back exercises I can do without experiencing pain are walking and swimming. Back pain exercises aggravate my problem (pressure on a nerve from scar tissue). The only thing approaching a back exercise that works for me is lying on the floor with my lower legs draped on a couch. This procedure done a couple of times every day relaxes my back muscles and eases the pain.’

One word of warning about swimming: the kicking leg action of breaststroke may be difficult for people with lower back pain. But if this is the stroke you prefer, you can easily modify it by doing the breaststroke arm action with a gentle ‘crawl’ leg action, as if you were doing front crawl.
