Lower Back Pain Causes
Upper and lower back pain causes can be blamed on everything from injuries to disease. Some of the causes of back pain stem from being out of shape, some from moving incorrectly, and some from what happens to our bodies as we age.
Back pain may be caused by a sprain or strain; or it may be caused by hours spent inert on the couch, which is why muscles often are so easily “strainable” to begin with.
In this article we will start out by taking a look at just some of the many things that could be lower back pain causes and what can go wrong – not for the purpose of scaring ourselves into a hypochondriacal frenzy, but to get an idea of what can go wrong and when, what can be prevented and how, and what can be eased and what can be healed.
Causes Back Pain – What Can Go Wrong
Back pain can be divided into two main types: the first, mechanical back pain (also known as musculoskeletal pain) involves strains, sprains, and any other injury that doesn’t cause damage to the nerves.
Compressive pain (also called neurogenic pain) occurs when the nerve roots of the spine are irritated or pinched and is one of the common lower back pain causes. Among the symptoms that the nerves are involved are pain and numbness or weakness in the area supplied by the nerve, which can extend into the arms, or down below the knee.
Traditionally, orthopedic surgeons treated mechanical back pain, and neurosurgeons handled compressive problems, but increasingly, the lines are blurred.
The people who experience back pain can be divided into three main types. People with normal backs doing abnormal activity, people with abnormal backs doing normal activity, or people doing normal activity for which they’re not prepared.
Although the causes back pain might seem to come “out of the blue,” chances are it’s been easing its way over the horizon for quite some time. Cumulative stress on bones and soft tissue adds up, and wears us down – degeneration occurs. You might think it was that heavy suitcase that put your back “out,” but the overall condition of the spine and its support structure – which your lifestyle has been affecting, one way or the other, for years – are the real lower back pain causes. And the condition of that spine and support structure is what’s going to determine how fast you will recover, too.
As for exactly what’s to blame, we might never know. For about 85 percent of people we don’t have a clearly identifiable cause of the pain. We have a general idea, but can’t find anything definitive.
The exact lower back pain causes often elude us. There are lots and lots of things that can be the causes of back pain that make it seem like the back is mad at us.
