Lower Back Pain – Herniated Disc
Results from a recent US survey suggest that people with herniated discs need to be especially careful about exercise, since their rate of exercise-related injury is high. Among the survey participants, 15 per cent of those who had disc problems incurred injury from exercise, while only 3 per cent of the participants with low back pain found exercise harmful. The point, however, is not to avoid back exercises, but to know which exercises to do and when to do them.
Some specialists and some exercise books offer dangerous exercise advice, such as felling individuals to stretch their hamstrings by bending over and touching their toes. This is a recipe for disaster. Double-leg raises should also be outlawed because of the pressure they put on the discs. The same is true for straight-leg sit-ups.
For you, building strength, especially in your abdominal muscles, takes priority over all stretching exercises. As general fitness exercises, nothing can beat walking and swimming. Try to pursue them both, beginning as soon as possible after your acute pain ebbs. This will help you beat the odds of remaining limited by disability.
The best professional treatment for chronic herniated disc lower back pain, is individualized back exercise therapy. If you have not been able to perform back exercises because of pain, don’t give up yet. It is probably sufficient to put you on the track towards health and well-being, but don’t hesitate to seek the personal advice of a physiotherapist or other expert in exercise as rehabilitation.
