Relieve Back Pain

Few complementary therapies are as potentially useful to relieve back pain as kinesiology – the study of the principles and mechanics of movement. Applied kinesiology involves the use of a wide range of non-drug, non-surgical procedures, ranging from manipulation to massage to exercise.

But what usually attracts most repeat customers to this type of back pain relief is the kinesiologist’s interest in and knowledge about muscles. Most therapists will measure muscles in their patients backs, hips or legs and test them for strength and flexibility; and then determine what specific, corrective movements and exercises will work best after evaluation.

In a recent back pain survey, a selection of kinesiologists were used to treat a sample of patients – all were chiropractors who had received an additional degree in kinesiology – the study of the mechanics and anatomy of movement. They were able to help 75% of the participants, which is impressive, considering that all of these patients were severely limited by low back pain, sciatica or a ruptured disc.

Kinesiologists usually employ similar techniques to relieve back pain as those used by chiropractors, including a gentle form of manipulation. But their expertise in the area of movement seems to give them a substantial added advantage.

One of the patients, a disabled back sufferer, was in severe pain during the five years that she saw chiropractors, orthopedic surgeons, neuro-surgeons and physiotherapists. After a few months of treatment by a kinesiologist, she made a complete recovery. Applied kinesiology – heat, massage, acupressure, gentle adjustments and stretching exercises – finally worked for her.

It probably won’t be possible to find a kinesiologist in your local Yellow Pages, but you may be able to contact one via the national branch of the International College of Applied Kinesiology.

Applied kinesiology integrates the advantages of manipulation and individualized exercise with knowledge about how to put your muscles in good working order. With their special training in muscles and movement, these specialists can alleviate and relieve back pain of many different forms.
