Simple Back Pain Exercise
You may find that you want to attempt the Total Body Relaxation back pain exercise (below) twice a day, for the sheer stress relief it brings. As for the other exercises in this section, I suggest that you begin with three repetitions of each. Once you are comfortable with that number, you can increase it by one repetition every other day until you are performing a total of ten repetitions.
The Total Body Relaxation BAck Pain Exercise
It may well take you several minutes to spread the feeling of relaxation throughout your body. There’s no need to rush. Just enjoy the sensation of willing your body to relax. It will convince you that you can gain control over physical pain, as well as anxiety, stress and fear.
Starting position: Lie on your back with a pillow under your knees, legs slightly apart, and arms at your sides. Steps:
- Let your body go limp, so that your neck, arms and legs shift naturally into their most comfortable positions.
- Think about relaxing your muscles, starting with your feet, ankles and legs.
- Concentrate on making the individual muscles and joints relax, working your way up your body to your neck and head.
Note; It may help you to tense some of your muscles slightly, before releasing and relaxing them. For example, first make a fist, and then let your hand go limp. Some people find that doing this exercise in the dark is so relaxing that it actually helps them fall asleep!
